STACCATO PUBLISHES ITS DIMENSIONS AS AN UNLABELED TRIPLE — "Dimensions 8.7" x 1.5" x 5.9"" — AND THE AXIS ORDER WAS ESTABLISHED FROM ITS CATALOGUE RATHER THAN ASSUMED. Reading a triple as length × width × height is the directory's own rendering convention, not a fact about the maker, and recording it that way on the maker's behalf would be an assumption sitting in three fields at once. Four Staccato models settle it. Against barrel lengths of 3.5, 3.9, 4.4 and 5.0 in, the CS, C2, P and XC publish triples of 7.1 × 1.45 × 5.4, 7.5 × 1.49 × 5.5, 8.1 × 1.5 × 5.9 and 8.7 × 1.5 × 5.9: the FIRST number moves with the barrel almost one-for-one (+0.4, +0.6, +0.6 against +0.4, +0.5, +0.6), which is what an overall length does and nothing else does. The THIRD does not track the barrel at all — it pairs the P with the XC at 5.9 and the CS with the C2 at 5.4 and 5.5, which is frame size, so it is the height.
